What Is Time, and How Are You Using Yours?

The Greeks had two words for time.

Chronos” is clock time. We use it to set and keep appointments, to celebrate birthdays, to pay bills. Chronos is very useful.

But, being silly Westerners, we think “Chronos” is the only kind of time.

The Greeks had a second word for time, KairosKairos is the supreme moment. It could be a split second when there is an opening and something shifts, or could shift. My girlfriend asked me to marry her in a moment of Kairos (I said Yes.) Christians might say that God bends natural laws to create miracles in our lives, moments of Kairos.

So don’t just “spend your time.” Don’t just schedule meetings and rely on Chronos. Watch for your supreme moments, too.
